A couple help-wanted ads from El Mercurio, one of the leading Santiago dailies, from the Nov. 7 edition:
Each one starts out:
Council of Upper Public Administration
National Civil Service Division
TO CHOOSE THE BEST TALENT IS THE BEST FOR CHILE
The one on the left:
National public contest for EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: CHILEAN NUCLEAR ENERGY COMMISSION. Seeking highly qualified director to contribute to the development of secure, efficient and sustainable energy* in the country, with strong management abilities, strategic vision, success orientation and capacity to assemble high-performance work teams.**
*Oh and also nuclear power
**Must be bilingual, Spanish and Beaurocratese.
The one on the right:
NATIONAL DIRECTOR – NATIONAL GEOLOGIC AND MINING SERVICE.
You remember — this is the department in charge of geological hazards including mine safety, volcanoes, earthquakes, mudslides, you name it. Apparently they are just getting around to hiring a new one three months after sacking the last guy over the San Jose mine collapse. You can see they are taking this whole mine safety thing very seriously…I’m sure the families of the four Chilean miners who died last month (according to official statistics) are also thrilled with the pace of change.
